You're Going to Serve A Master

We are going to serve one of two masters; either God or Satan. These are the only choices we have.

Romans 6:16 states, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

Paul states that whoever you “yield” yourself to obey, you become a servant of. The word yield comes from the Greek word paristanete, which means to assist, bring before, command, commend, present, prove, provide, show, stand (before, by, here, up, with), and yield.

So, one way to understand this verse is: who does your life assist; God or Satan?

If you are a child of God:

  • You have been changed

  • You have been saved from sin

  • You have been justified by faith

Therefore, because of this change, you no longer yield yourself to serve Satan, but you yield yourself to serve God through Jesus Christ and serve Him alone. Luke 16:13 states:

“No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

Jesus also states in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

These two scriptures indicate that our allegiance will be to one or the other. We are either going to serve God or Satan. You cannot serve both. Furthermore, if you truly love Jesus, you will keep His commandments.

Finally, the choice you make, God or Satan will determine whether you receive eternal death or eternal life.

You cannot walk in righteousness while yielding to sin. You cannot claim Christ while serving the enemy.

You have been changed. You have been delivered. You have been justified.

Now live like it. Choose Jesus Christ!
