Stay Ready!

1 Thessalonians 5:1–18 states:

"[1] But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. [2] For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. [3] For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. [4] But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. [5] Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. [6] Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. [7] For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. [8] But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. [9] For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, [10] Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. [11] Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. [12] And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; [13] And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves. [14] Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. [15] See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. [16] Rejoice evermore. [17] Pray without ceasing. [18] In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.:

In 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11, Paul emphasizes the importance of being prepared for the inevitable return of Jesus Christ. He tells the Christians at Thessalonica that they should not need to be reminded that the Lord will return, because they already know that “the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Since Christ’s return is certain, believers must always be spiritually prepared.

Paul reminds them that they are children of the light and children of the day. Therefore, they should not live as those who are spiritually asleep or indifferent. Instead, they are to remain sober, alert, and vigilant. The believer’s life should reflect the light of Christ rather than the darkness of the world.

As children of the light, Christians are equipped with spiritual armor. Paul exhorts believers to put on:

• Faith

• Love

• The hope of salvation

These characteristics protect and strengthen the child of God while awaiting Christ’s return.

Paul further reminds the Thessalonian believers that God has not appointed them to wrath, but to obtain salvation through Jesus Christ. This glorious promise is possible because Jesus Christ died for our sins so that, whether we are living or have fallen asleep in death, we will live together with Him. Because of this hope, Christians are commanded to encourage, comfort, and build up one another in the faith.

Later in the chapter, in verses 16–18, Paul gives three simple yet powerful commands that should characterize every Christian’s life:

• Rejoice always.

• Pray without ceasing.

• Give thanks in every circumstance.

These commands reveal the attitude of a believer who completely trusts in God’s sovereignty.

This entire chapter serves as practical instruction for every child of God. As Christians, we are called to place complete faith in God’s Word. If Jesus promised that He would come again, then we must believe His promise and live every day in preparation for His return.

Because we have been illuminated by God’s presence and are under the influence of the Holy Spirit, our lives should consistently demonstrate:

• Faith

• Love

• Hope

• Salvation

Why should we live under the influence of the Holy Spirit? Because Jesus Christ willingly died for our sins, rose from the grave, and secured our salvation. His sacrifice transforms the way we live, think, and respond to life’s challenges.

When these truths take root in our hearts, they produce visible evidence in our daily lives:

• We rejoice always, regardless of our circumstances, because our joy is rooted in Christ rather than our situation.

• We pray without ceasing, maintaining continual fellowship with God and drawing upon His strength to break every chain that seeks to hinder our spiritual growth.

• We give thanks in every circumstance, not because every circumstance is pleasant, but because we know that God remains in control and is working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

Paul’s message is as relevant today as it was to the church at Thessalonica. Christ is coming again. Therefore, let us remain awake, faithful, hopeful, prayerful, thankful, and spiritually prepared, living each day as children of the light until our Savior returns.

Inevitably if you Stay Ready then you won’t have to Get Ready when Jesus comes back.
