God Our Rock, Fortress and Deliverer

2 Samuel 22:1–2

“And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer.”

David shares his testimony through the words of a song. This song is directed to God in gratitude for His faithfulness and for establishing David in the position God had ordained for him. God had given David victory over all his enemies, including his greatest earthly adversary, Saul, and had elevated him to the throne as King of Israel.

David uses three powerful metaphors to describe God:

• A Rock

• A Fortress

• A Deliverer

God Is Our Rock

David describes God as his Rock. The Hebrew word sela refers to a rugged, lofty, craggy rock or stronghold. It conveys the ideas of strength, permanence, stability, and security.

For David, God was the foundation upon which he placed his complete confidence. This metaphor emphasizes God’s strength and the security experienced by those who trust in Him. While circumstances changed, God remained unchanging.

God was and still is the Rock upon whom His people can safely stand.

God Is Our Fortress

David next describes God as his Fortress. The Hebrew word matsud means a fortress, castle, defense, stronghold, or fortified place.

God was David’s place of safety, protection, and defense against every enemy.

During David’s reign, God literally established him in a stronghold. 2 Samuel 5:9–12 (KJV) declares:

“[9] So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. [10] And David went on, and grew great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him. [11] And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house. [12] And David perceived that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.”

When God is with you, who can stand against you?

David was God’s anointed servant, and in God’s perfect timing He elevated David to the throne and firmly established his kingdom. What God ordains, no enemy can overthrow.

God Is Our Deliverer

David also describes God as his Deliverer. The Hebrew word means to rescue, to carry away safely, to deliver, or to cause one to escape.

Throughout David’s life, God repeatedly delivered him.

God gave him victory over the Philistine giant, Goliath. He continually protected David from Saul’s jealousy and murderous intentions. Time after time, David found himself surrounded by danger, yet God delivered him from the snares of his enemies.

The clear conclusion is this: God becomes our Rock, our Fortress, and our Deliverer as we place our trust in Him.

David Trusted God

2 Samuel 22:3 (KJV)

“The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.”

Once again, David describes God as his Rock, but now he explains why he trusts Him completely.

David trusted God because:

• God was his Shield, protecting him from every enemy.

• God was the Horn of his Salvation, the source of his strength and victory.

• God was his High Tower, lifting him above danger and giving him perspective.

• God was his Refuge, providing safety in times of trouble.

• God was his Savior, delivering him from violence and destruction.

David recognized God’s hand in every season of his life, and his poetic expression of gratitude stands as one of Scripture’s greatest testimonies of faith.

Like David, we must also place our complete trust in God.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV) reminds us:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Conclusion

When we see God as David saw Him, trust God as David trusted Him, and seek God as David sought after Him, we too can accomplish great things for God’s Kingdom.

David’s greatness was not rooted in his military ability, political wisdom, or personal courage. His greatness was rooted in his relationship with God. God was David’s highest priority, and because God was first in his life, David experienced God’s power, protection, provision, and peace.

When God becomes our priority, He becomes our:

• Rock, the firm foundation upon which we stand regardless of life’s storms.

• Fortress, our place of refuge and protection when danger surrounds us.

• Deliverer, the One who rescues us from trouble and safely carries us through life’s greatest trials.

When we put our trust in God alone and make Him the priority of our lives, He will faithfully sustain us through every season.

Therefore, let us trust God completely, because just as He was David’s Rock, Fortress, and Deliverer, He will also be our Rock, our Fortress, and our Deliverer.
