You Are Precious to God

Isaiah 43:1–4 (KJV) declares:

“[1] But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

[2] When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

[3] For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

[4] Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.”

These verses in Isaiah 43:1–4 reveal how God viewed His chosen people in the Old Testament, the Israelites. Under the New Testament, however, the Body of Christ, the Church has become God’s covenant people through Jesus Christ. Therefore, this passage provides a powerful reflection of how God relates to and feels about His people today.

Isaiah begins by reminding God’s people of their origin.

In verse 1, God declares that He created and formed them. He identifies them as Jacob and Israel which are descendants of Abraham through Isaac affirming their identity as His chosen nation. This is not merely a biological connection but a covenant relationship established and sustained by God Himself.

God then issues a command rooted in assurance: “Fear not.” Why? Because “I have redeemed thee… I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.” This language expresses ownership, intimacy, and personal relationship. God does not deal with His people as a distant ruler but as one who knows them individually and calls them by name. This reflects the closeness between the sovereign God and His people.

In verse 2, God assures them of His presence in adversity. Whether facing overwhelming waters or consuming fire, His promise is not the absence of trials but His presence through them. The imagery conveys that no circumstance no matter how severe can ultimately destroy those who belong to Him.

In verse 3, God identifies Himself as their Savior and recalls His redemptive acts, particularly their deliverance from Egypt. By mentioning Egypt, Ethiopia, and Seba, God emphasizes the great value He places on His people demonstrating that He is willing to act powerfully on their behalf.

Verse 4 brings us to the climax of God’s declaration: “Since thou wast precious in my sight… and I have loved thee.” Here, God reveals His heart. His people are not merely chosen they are precious, honored, and loved. This truth carries profound significance for us today as the Church, the Body of Christ. Through our relationship with God in Jesus Christ, we too are regarded as precious in His sight. To be “precious” means to be of great value, rare, and worthy of care and attention. It implies that God esteems His people highly and handles them with intentional love and purpose.

Because we are precious to God, we must never measure our worth by the world’s standards or by our past failures. Our value is determined by the One who created us, redeemed us, and called us by name. Therefore, as the Church, we must live with confidence, not fear; with purpose, not uncertainty; and with gratitude, knowing that we belong to God.

If God declares, “You are mine,” then no trial can define you, no fire can destroy you, no weapon can be used to harm you and no circumstance can separate you from His love because you are precious in His sight.
