Standing Firm on the Word of God When the World Is Falling Away

In 2 Timothy 3, Paul informed Timothy of the coming apostasy (the falling away of the church). In verses 2–4, Paul listed several vices that would serve as evidence of this apostasy. This list begins and ends with misplaced love, which stands in opposition to the love of God.

These vices, which mankind would manifest during this period, are listed below:

  • Lovers of their own selves – Those who glorify themselves above God.

  • Covetous – Those who love money and material possessions.

  • Boasters – People who speak with excessive pride about their own achievements, possessions, abilities, or even the accomplishments of those close to them.

  • Proud – Individuals who are arrogantly and disdainfully self-important.

  • Blasphemers – Those who speak irreverently against God and sacred things.

  • Disobedient to parents – Children who rebel against the authority of their parents.

  • Unthankful – People who fail to show gratitude or appreciation for blessings and kindness received.

  • Unholy – Those who are profane in their conversation and manner of life, living contrary to God’s standards.

  • Without natural affection – Hard-hearted, callous, and lacking normal human compassion and love.

  • Trucebreakers – People who violate agreements, treaties, or covenants. They are irreconcilable and unwilling to make peace.

  • False accusers – Individuals who make false statements intended to damage another person’s reputation.

  • Without self-control (Incontinent) – People who cannot restrain their actions, emotions, or words.

  • Fierce – Brutal individuals who are insensitive, savage, and cruel.

  • Despisers of those who are good – Haters of whatever or whoever is good; opposed to goodness in every form.

  • Traitors – Treacherous people who are willing to betray others for personal gain.

  • Heady – Reckless individuals who act foolishly and carelessly without regard for consequences.

  • High-minded – People with an inflated opinion of themselves, their intelligence, appearance, abilities, or importance.

  • Lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God – Those who pursue sensual and worldly pleasures while neglecting God.

In verse 5, Paul describes these apostates as having a deformed spirituality characterized by irreverent behavior. Though they maintain an outward appearance of religion, they deny the power of God. They possess a form of godliness but reject its transforming influence.

We are truly living in the period Paul warned Timothy about nearly 2,000 years ago. There is a great falling away whenever people cease to stand upon the principles of God’s Word. Behaviors that were once recognized as wrong are now celebrated, while biblical truths are often rejected or condemned.

The evidence of this apostate behavior is rampant throughout our culture, politics, government institutions, and even religious organizations. Everything has become centered on the individual. Relationships have become transactional and focused on what one can gain or receive. Rather than seeking to help others, many are concerned only with helping themselves.

People living an apostate lifestyle are living a lie. They pretend to be godly but have no genuine desire to pursue godliness. They want the appearance of religion while continuing in their sins. Such individuals are dangerous because they influence others to follow the same path.

Therefore, Paul warns Timothy and us today to turn away from people who live in this manner.

In verse 9, Paul further assures Timothy that false teachers and apostates will not ultimately succeed. False systems come and go. Although they may appear prosperous and influential for a time, their deception eventually becomes evident. They can lead people only so far. While they may offer temporary reform, they ultimately fail because they are rooted in the world, and everything of the world is destined to fail.

The world’s systems are corrupt and temporary. The only thing that will endure forever is the Word of God. Isaiah 40:6-8 states:

“All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the Spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it; surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

We must keep our trust in the Word of God. This is Paul’s message to Timothy. We must stand firm upon the Word of God in the face of a society that is:

  • Falling away

  • Experiencing moral decline

  • Filled with false teachers teaching false doctrine

We are to:

  • Stand firm upon the Word of God

  • Trust the Word of God

  • Live according to the Word of God

This truth is further emphasized in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

The Word of God is of God. All Scripture comes from the very mind of God. Its purpose is to provide doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction. Through it, the man of God, and consequently the people of God, are equipped to carry out the will of God.

In times when the world is filled with disarray, disruption, and moral decline, the Word of God remains a firm foundation upon which we must establish our lives. The Word of God will never fail. As a result we can have confidence in the Word of God and thus stand firm upon the Word of God.

We can trust the Word of God because it benefits us through:

  • Doctrine – Establishes the godly principles and truths we must follow.

  • Reproof – Provides conviction, exposing sin, error, and wrongdoing.

  • Correction – Restores us to the right path by correcting mistakes and errors.

  • Instruction in Righteousness – Teaches us how to live according to God’s will and grow in spiritual maturity.

As believers, our confidence must never be placed in the changing philosophies of men or the shifting values of society. Our trust must remain firmly anchored in the eternal and unchanging Word of God.
