We Shall Overcome

1 John 5:4

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

During the darkest days of the Civil Rights Movement, African Americans lifted their voices in the song We Shall Overcome, written by Charles Albert Tindley.

That song gave courage to march, strength to boycott, and hope to persevere. History shows that African Americans overcame slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination, racism, and abuse. But Scripture reminds us that there is an even greater victory every person must overcome.  That is victory over sin.

1 John 5:1–5, is written by John the Apostle, in this scripture believers are reminded that:

  • New birth comes through believing in Jesus Christ.

  • Love for God is demonstrated through obedience.

  • Faith in Christ gives victory over the world.

John teaches that overcoming does not come through political power, wealth, or status. It comes through faith.

Civil rights opened doors to public spaces.

Christ opens the door to eternal life.

Laws can change society.

Only Jesus can change the heart.

To be “born of God” means we are no longer defeated by the world’s systems, temptations, or pressures. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are empowered to live differently, to love deeply, obey faithfully, and stand firmly.

We don’t merely sing We Shall Overcome.

Because of our faith in Jesus Christ, we live it!!!

We Shall Overcome through our Faith in Jesus Christ!!!
