It's Your Season

Psalm 1:1–3 states:

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

In these verses we understand that a godly man does not seek the counsel of ungodly people, nor does he seek advice from those who embrace sin. Instead, he seeks the comfort and direction of God’s divine Word. The text says that he delights in God’s perfect Word.

I appreciate the use of the word delight. In the Hebrew language, it comes from the word chephets, meaning desire, pleasure, delight, purpose, or something greatly valued. This man finds joy and satisfaction in the Word of God.  This level of pursuit positions a man to be productive in God’s season.

Ask yourself: Do you desire the Word of God with such passion that it gives you pleasure?

Now let me explain.  You have been walking with God for years, and instead of bearing fruit when you wanted to, you have felt fruitless. Yet you have been praying, giving, studying God’s Word, attending worship and Bible study, and remaining faithful. But your situation has not improved and in some cases, it may have grown worse. Child of God, hold on. Do not grow weary. Keep the faith.

Verse 3 says:

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season...”

A tree planted by water has a constant source of strength, nourishment, and life. It may face heat, storms, or drought, but it remains rooted.  The key phrase is: “bringeth forth his fruit in his season.”

Maybe it is not your season yet. But do not stop growing. Do not give up. Do not throw in the towel, because God is not finished with you.

There was a man who had several mango trees in his backyard. Every year, all the trees blossomed and produced fruit except one. This continued for years. He became so frustrated that he considered uprooting that tree and planting another one.

But one day, that same tree finally blossomed and bore fruit. And the fruit it produced was sweeter and more delicious than all the other mango trees in the yard.

There is a message here for every child of God:

  • You may feel overlooked.

  • You may feel unproductive.

  • You may wonder why others seem to flourish while you wait.

But keep on:

  • Obeying God

  • Following God

  • Being faithful to God

  • Trusting God

When it is your time and your season, you will bear fruit.  Your roots are growing even when no fruit is showing.

Do not measure your future by your present silence. Some fruit takes longer because God is preparing something sweeter. If you stay planted by the rivers of His Word, your season will come. And when it comes, what God brings forth in your life will be worth every season you had to wait.
