If God Said It Then He Will Do It

God swore an oath to Abraham. Genesis 22:17–18 states,

“[17] That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; [18] And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.”

In this text, God makes a commitment to Abraham to do two phenomenal things. First, He promises Abraham that his descendants will grow into a great multitude beyond his comprehension and will possess the land of their enemies. Secondly, all nations would be blessed through his seed. This oath was established by the highest authority because God swore by His own name and committed these promises to Abraham and his descendants.

Genesis 22:15–19 summarizes the essence of God’s promise. The fact that God had spoken it assured its fulfillment. It is significant that this promise in Genesis is given in the context of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac, who was the immediate fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. The ultimate fulfillment would also come through Isaac and his descendants.

God’s sworn oath, established under the highest authority His own name is much like what occurs in a courtroom before testimony is given. The judge may ask, “Do you swear to tell the truth?” With a hand placed on the Bible, a person responds, “I swear that the evidence I shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God.” In doing so, the individual is sworn in under a higher authority than himself.

Isn’t it good to know that God keeps His Word? Therefore, we can have assurance, confidence, faith, and hope that God will do exactly what He has promised.

God stated in Genesis 22:18, “And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.” Ultimately, this promise and hope pointed to Jesus Christ, through whom salvation would come to all nations. Like Abraham, we too must have hope, believing and trusting that God’s Word will come to fruition. If God said it, then He will do it.
