Hope Will Hold Us

When storms and turbulence occur:

  • Ships have anchors

  • Houses have foundations

  • Airplanes have stabilizers

Likewise, when trials, trouble, and travail affect the child of God, hope anchors and sustains us through it all. Let us pause for a moment and consider the Apostle Paul’s words in Hebrews 6:19 (KJV):

“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.”

In the context of this passage, Paul is teaching about the certainty of God’s promises to His people. He illustrates this certainty by pointing to Abraham. Hebrews 6:13–15 (KJV) states:

“For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.”

God spoke the promise, Abraham believed it, and God fulfilled it not on Abraham’s timetable, but in God’s perfect timing. Abraham had to wait faithfully until the promise was manifested.

Paul then connects Abraham’s faith to that of every believer. Hebrews 6:17–18 (KJV) declares:

“Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.”

Here, immutability conveys that God’s Word does not change. If God said it, we can trust it. No matter how long fulfillment takes, we have hope in His Word to anchor us. Paul emphasizes that we must “lay hold upon hope.” Hebrews 6:19 affirms this truth hope is our “anchor of the soul.”

  • It is hope that holds us steady.

  • It is hope that keeps us faithful.

  • It is hope that carries us through every trial, every tribulation, and every trouble.

Since God’s Word cannot change Hope will hold us because Hope reminds us of this eternal truth:

If God said it, then I believe it. And in His time, God will bring it to pass.
