Do Whatever He Says

John 2:1–5 KJV

“And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”

In this passage we find Jesus attending a wedding in Cana of Galilee along with His mother and His disciples. During the celebration a problem arose, the wedding party ran out of wine. In Jewish culture this would have been a significant embarrassment for the host family.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, noticed the problem and brought it to His attention, saying, “They have no wine.” Her request implied that Jesus could do something to resolve the situation.

Jesus responded, “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.” This was not a statement of disrespect but rather a declaration that His ministry would unfold according to God’s timing.

Yet Mary demonstrated remarkable faith. She did not argue with Jesus or question His response. Instead, she turned to the servants and simply said:

“Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”

Jesus mother, Mary, did not know how Jesus would solve the problem, but she had confidence that He would. Her words reveal a powerful spiritual principle: when we trust Jesus, we must also obey Jesus.

The servants followed His instructions, and through their obedience Jesus performed His first recorded miracle, turning water into wine.

This teaches us an important lesson for our lives today. If we expect Jesus to move in our lives, we must have the same attitude as Mary and the same obedience as the servants.

Jesus later reinforced this truth in John 14:15, saying:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

Love for Christ is demonstrated through obedience to Christ.

As Christians we must do what He says:

  • Our obedience is not optional it is required.

  • Our faith is not optional it is required.

  • Our trust in Christ must be demonstrated through action.

When we follow the words of Jesus, even when we do not fully understand them, we place ourselves in position to witness the power of God at work in our lives.

So the lesson remains simple yet profound:

Whatever He says do it.
