Your Focus is Your Priority

We are a culture that relishes in worrying. We are constantly stimulated by the cable news stations whipping us into a frenzy about the actions of our local government officials, state government officials and our nation’s federal government officials. Some news stations present the news from a right wing leaning viewpoint while others present the news from a more liberal viewpoint. However all news netwotks have a viewpoint or viewing public which they are attempting to attract.

This cycle of news causes people both viewing traditional cable news and social media to select platforms which placate to their own perspective or viewpoint. This results in further worrying about the events that are occurring in our society and the impact they have on the individual viewing the news. The challenge which we all face is worrying, stressing or getting angry about these world issues can’t change anything about the outcome of these matters. Our worrying can’t change the outcome of the:

  • politics

  • economy

  • social trends

  • world instability

The Gospel of Matthew 6:25-27 states,

“[25] Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? [26] Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? [27] Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” Jesus states “take no thought”, He is instructing his disciples to not worry about their circumstances, understanding that God takes care of us in the same manner God takes care of and provides for the fowl of the air.

Furthermore Jesus states in Matthew 6:30-33,

“[30] Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? [31] Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? Or, What shall we drink? Or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? [32] (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. [33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Our priority is to maintain our attention and focus on Jesus Christ. He is the priority in our life therefore we ought to seek His will in every circumstance and situation occurring in our life, in our community, in our society, in our government and in our world. Our first concern is the Kingdom of God. When we put God first:

  • God orders our steps

  • God provides what we need

  • God gives peace even when circumstances are unstable

Our priority is to seek Him. Jesus Christ is our priority and we seek what he wants us to do. John 17:14-16 states,

“[14] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. [15] I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. [16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” Clearly we are in the world but not of the world and thus we’re guided by Jesus Christ viewpoint and not the world’s viewpoint.
