Trusting God Through Suffering

Sometimes we ask ourselves difficult questions: Why is God allowing us to suffer hardship? How long will this suffering last? When will God deliver us from our troubles?

These are not new questions. Throughout history, faithful believers have wrestled with the same concerns. One of the clearest biblical examples is found in the life of Job.

Job was a man who experienced tremendous loss. He lost his children, his home, his possessions, and his wealth. In addition to these tragedies, his health also failed him. Job endured immense suffering and pain. In the midst of his trials, he asked God questions similar to the ones we sometimes ask today.

Job 7:19–20 (KJV) states:

“How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? Why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?”

Here Job asks God how long he must endure such suffering and why he must bear these burdens. This passage demonstrates an important truth: it is not wrong to bring our questions and struggles before God. God allows His people to express their pain honestly.

However, what we must carefully observe is God’s response to Job. In Job chapters 38–40, God answers Job not with direct explanations, but with a series of questions. These questions emphasize God’s sovereignty, wisdom, and authority over creation. For example, God asks Job in Job 38:4–6 (KJV):

“Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched the line upon it?Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner stone thereof?”

Through these rhetorical questions, God reminds Job of a powerful truth: God alone is the Creator and sustainer of the universe. God is essentially asking Job:

  • Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

  • Who determined the dimensions of the earth?

  • Who set its cornerstone in place?

The implied answer is clear: only God possesses that authority and power.

As God continues describing His creation, Job begins to recognize the greatness and sovereignty of God. Eventually Job responds with humility.

Job 42:1–5 (KJV) says:

“Then Job answered the LORD, and said, I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee. Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.”

In these verses Job acknowledges several important truths:

  • God’s unlimited wisdom and knowledge

  • God’s presence and authority over everything

  • God’s power that cannot be challenged or questioned

Job also uses the word abhor in reference to himself. This reflects his deep humility and repentance. He recognizes that he had spoken about matters he did not fully understand. His encounter with God opened his eyes to the majesty and sovereignty of the Lord.

This experience teaches us an important lesson.

Even when we do not understand why we suffer, we must remember that God is sovereign. His wisdom exceeds our understanding, and His purposes are greater than what we can see. Proverbs 9:10 (KJV) reminds us:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

True wisdom begins when we reverence God and trust His authority, even when our circumstances are difficult.

Therefore, when we face hardship and suffering, we must hold on to this truth:

  • God knows all, sees all, and possesses all power.

  • Even when we do not understand what He is doing, we can trust that God is always right and His purposes are always good.
