The Greatest Love Of All

I John 3:16 states,
“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
God’s love for us is revealed through sacrifice. He was determined to rescue humanity from the devastation of sin, and He demonstrated that love by giving His Son. This is not a passive love it is active, intentional, and costly.
Because God loved us this way, we who belong to Christ are called to love the same way: sacrificially. Love is not merely something we say; it is something we do.
When we see someone in need and have the ability to help, Scripture urges us to respond with compassion. Jesus illustrated this in the parable of the Good Samaritan, a man who interrupted his own journey, used his own resources, and took personal responsibility to care for a wounded stranger.
The apostle John echoes this truth in John 3:17-18 which states,
“[17] But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? [18] My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”
This passage teaches us what it means to “lay down our lives” for others. Sometimes that sacrifice looks like giving our time. Sometimes it looks like giving our money. Sometimes it looks like having patience, forgiveness, or simply showing up.
John writes as an eyewitness. He personally saw Jesus heal the sick, feed the hungry, comfort the broken, and ultimately give His life on the cross. Having witnessed Christ’s love firsthand, John urges believers to live out that same love in practical ways.
Each of us has the capacity to reflect Jesus in our daily lives. Imagine the impact if every believer chose to love like Christ one person at a time.
It would transform families.
It would strengthen communities.
It would change the world.
This is the greatest love of all.
