Psalm 40:1-7 KJV
“[1] I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. [2] He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. [3] And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. [4] Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. [5] Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. [6] Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. [7] Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,”
David writes this Psalm to give Thanksgiving to God for saving him from the circumstances which he figuratively or actually is in. David is in a horrible pit where he cries out to God to save him. This horrible pit represents a place of despair and torment. David said he has waited upon the Lord patiently for salvation.
Finally the Lord heard his plea and responded by lifting him out of the horrible pit. The Lord then places David upon a solid rock. This rock represents a solid foundation. This now provides David with new assurance as this rock has established him. Compared to the horrible pit, David is now in a place of stability, safety and assurance.
The Lord saved David and thus has given David a new song. This is interpreted as a new purpose which David’s posture is to praise the Lord recognizing what God has done for him. David praises God for the many blessings which were bestowed upon. He does this as a testimony before the people so that they may know and understand the importance of trusting God. This public testimony is to show that God blesses those who aren’t proud but those who place their trust in God.
David’s wording in verse 6 indicated that through the institutions of animal sacrifice of the Old Testament, God desired obedience rather than just a ritual or performance. Animal sacrifice were a foreshadowing of the final sacrifice. Jesus Christ sacrifice on the cross in obedience to God would be the ultimate sacrifice for mankind sin. Hebrews 10:5 KJV speaks to this,
“Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me”
In verse 7 David testified that the Word of God is a story of redemption. The New Testament reveals that this redemption is through Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
What can we learn from our text Psalm 40:1-7
We must cry out to the Lord
We must wait upon the Lord to answer our prayers
God will hear our request and save us
We must be willing to praise God for saving us
We must thank God for saving us
We must trust and obey God
Our worship must not be a ritual or performance but it must be intentional praise and thanksgiving to God
Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for sin
The Word of God is a story about redemption through Jesus Christ
