I AM HERE TO SERVE YOU GOD

1 Samuel 3:4–10

"Then the LORD called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. And the LORD called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”

Serving God is one of the most important callings in the life of a Christian. Believers are not merely saved from something we are saved for something: service to God. Our service reflects our complete love for Him. Deuteronomy 6:4–6 reminds us of this truth:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart.”

Samuel demonstrates this love through obedience. In 1 Samuel 3:10, God calls Samuel by name, and Samuel responds, “Speak, for your servant hears.” This response reveals Samuel’s posture humble, attentive, and willing to obey.

Although Samuel was young about twelve years old and not yet considered an adult he was spiritually receptive. He did not initially recognize God’s voice, but once instructed by Eli, Samuel positioned himself to hear and obey. His reply was not merely verbal; it reflected a heart ready to act on what God would say.

There are powerful lessons for us in this passage:

  • First, when God calls, we must place ourselves in a posture of obedience. Hearing God requires humility, attentiveness, and a willingness to follow His Word.

  • Second, God can and will use anyone who is willing even a child. Age, status, or experience do not limit God. What matters is availability and obedience.

Samuel teaches us that true service begins with a surrendered heart. May our response to God always be the same:

Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.”
