As Christians, our call to duty is to encourage one another. This is not optional it is a priority for every follower of Christ.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJV), the Bible says:
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”
This passage clearly teaches that we are to comfort and edify one another. The word comfort comes from the Greek parakaleite, meaning to exhort, encourage, or call alongside. Likewise, edify comes from oikodomeite, meaning to build up or strengthen.
Therefore, when we encourage others, we are not tearing down, but we are building up. Our responsibility as Christians is to help make one another stronger and better in the faith.
Additionally, Ephesians 4:29 (KJV) states:
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
This reminds us that our words must always be uplifting. If what we say does not build, encourage, or help, then it is better left unsaid. As believers, our speech should reflect grace and promote positive, Christ-centered outcomes.
A powerful example of encouragement in action is Barnabas, known as the “son of consolation.” His life demonstrates what it means to uplift others:
He championed others and he supported Paul when others doubted him (Acts 9:26–27)
He mentored and restored and he gave John Mark a second chance (Acts 15:37–39)
He supported the church financially and he gave sacrificially (Acts 4:34–37)
He strengthened the church and he encouraged believers in Antioch (Acts 11:25–26)
Like Barnabas, we are called to:
Champion the talents of others
Mentor and support others
Financially support the church
Encourage and strengthen the body of Christ
In doing so, we fulfill our duty as Christians building one another up in love and faith.
