A Delay Isn't A Denial

God anointed David as King in 1 Samuel 16:1–13 when he was approximately 15 years old, while Saul was still reigning. This anointing was not the immediate assumption of the throne, but rather a divine declaration of what was to come. It was a promise made by God upon David’s life.
David was not appointed king over Judah until 2 Samuel 2:1–4, around the age of 30. Even then, he did not yet rule over all Israel. It would take an additional 7½ years before he was made king over the unified nation in 2 Samuel 5:1–5.
This reveals a powerful truth:
What God declares in one season may not manifest until many seasons later.
In David’s case, there was a 22½-year gap between anointing and full appointment.
Yet this was not delay but it was divine development.
What Was God Doing in the Waiting Season?
During this period, David was not idle he was being shaped:
Serving under King Saul
Defeating Goliath
Enduring persecution and fleeing for his life
Living in the wilderness (En-gedi, caves, strongholds)
Building loyalty and leadership among future followers
Learning humility, restraint, and dependence on God
David was being tempered, just as a blacksmith tempers steel to strengthen a sword.
A Defining Moment of Character
In 1 Samuel 24:6, David had the opportunity to kill Saul but refused:
“The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S anointed…”
This moment reveals that David had the calling, but he also developed the character to handle it.
He understood:
You don’t have to force what God has already ordained.
Spiritual Application
Anointing does not equal immediate elevation
God will call you before He places you.
Delay is not denial but it is development
The waiting season is where God builds capacity.
God prepares you before He promotes you
Public elevation requires private formation.
Patience is proof of trust in God’s timing
Rushing can ruin what God is refining.
You don’t have to manipulate what God has already promised
If God said it, He will bring it to pass.
Character sustains what calling introduces
Without development, elevation becomes destruction.
Conclusion:
Ultimately God will keep His word but only in his timing and therefore what may appear as a delay is God preparing His anointed for their divine appointment.
