The Word of God Is Enough

2 Timothy 3:14-17 states,

“[14] But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; [15] And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. [16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

Paul, writing to young Timothy, exhorts him to remain anchored in the Word of God. Timothy is not instructed to seek new revelations, new philosophies, or cultural approval. He is commanded to continue in what he already knows. The Word of God is sufficient. It carries enough power, enough authority, and enough wisdom to equip Timothy for every assignment God has given him.

In verse 14 Paul says, “Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of.” The word “continue” carries the idea of abiding. In the Greek it is mene, meaning to remain, dwell, endure, stay rooted, abide, or stand firm. Timothy is not simply to remember Scripture but he is to live in it, dwell in it, and let it shape his thinking and conduct.

Paul reminds Timothy that this Word has been in him since childhood. II Timothy 1:5 tells us that Timothy’s sincere faith first lived in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. Additionally, Timothy learned directly from Paul as they traveled together on missionary journeys. Timothy’s foundation was built on God’s Word.

In verse 16 Paul declares, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God.” The phrase “inspiration of God” comes from the Greek word theopneustos, Theo meaning God and pneustos meaning breathed. Scripture is literally God-breathed. This means the Word of God carries God’s authority, God’s power, and God’s wisdom. Because it comes from God Himself, it is fully trustworthy and fully sufficient. The Word of God is enough.

Paul then explains how Scripture functions in the life of the believer:

  1. Doctrine

The Word of God establishes what the church believes and practices. It governs our teaching, guides our worship, and defines truth. Doctrine keeps the church anchored so we are not driven by emotion, trends, or culture.

  2. Reproof

The Word of God convicts and exposes error and sin. When the Word is preached faithfully, it confronts the heart and reveals where we are out of alignment with God’s will.

  3. Correction

The Word of God does not merely expose what is wrong, but it shows how to make it right. Scripture reforms behavior, restores spiritual direction, and redirects believers back into obedience.

  4. Instruction in Righteousness

The Word trains believers in godly living and Christlike character. This aligns with Jesus’ Great Commission in Matthew 28:19–20, where He commands believers not only to baptize but to teach converts to observe everything He commanded. The Word trains us how to live saved lives.

Verse 17 concludes that the Word equips the believer to be “perfect”, meaning mature, complete, and fully equipped. We’re ready for every good work God assigns.

The Word of God is enough:

  • It is enough to save us.

  • It is enough to shape us.

  • It is enough to correct us.

  • It is enough to prepare us for service.

If we will abide in the Word, the Word will equip us for everything God has called us to do.

The Word of God is Enough!!!
